How to Start a Blog & Why You Should Do It Today.

For the first time here on my blog, I’m going to dedicate an entire month to one single topic:

Creativity!

Follow my writing here on this blog for the entire month of August to earn a hand up on being more creative.

Here we go!

There’s something I’m particularly proud of right now. Someone asked me the following question: When you die, will you wish you had given more of yourself to the world?

The answer is a bold, resounding NO! I give so much of myself to the world — and to all of you — that there is no way I will ever wish I had given more. I give it all, right here.

But that wasn’t always the case. It all started when I decided to launch this thing called a blog.

Image: WritingWhen I started this blog years ago, my first post included nothing more than a picture of a Nutella jar with a birthday candle on top. The truth is, I wasn’t quite sure what to say.

Fast forward a few years, and this blog has brought me more goods than you can imagine! Like all in life, the benefits fall into both tangible and intangible benefits.

Let’s start with the tangibles this blog has brought me:

  • thousands of dollars in revenue
  • inspiring trips to New York, Guatemala, Austin, Portland
  • access to amazing clients and projects throughout the region
  • numerous speaking engagements that bring me more work and more word-of-mouth

Now, for my favorites — the intangibles:

  • hundreds of interesting conversations
  • incredible synthesis of ideas and novel concepts
  • respect from some of my favorite bloggers and thought leaders
  • endless journey of bitterness and learning

All of that sounds warm and fuzzy, but I bet all of you are still mulling over that line mentioning the thousands of dollars in revenue

I’m a fan of that one, too.

In my experience, most people misjudge just how difficult all of this web stuff really is. Truth is, anyone can do it with a little bit of tech knowledge and a loving push and shove

Don’t fret — we’ll take care of all of that stuff right here, including the tech stuff.

Content — What You Want to Share With the World

You are very different from everyone else, and your ideas are, too. I bet that if you think long and hard about your ideas and your point-of-view, it’s all pretty valuable, no? Nobody has lived through what you have, and nobody has put together all of those experiences and learnings into nugget-sized ideas like you have.

Your ideas rock, so why not share them?

Image: Colorful MacOnce you start ruminating on what you’d like to share with the world, start jotting down ideas and headlines you could potentially use. Do they sound like topics people would want to read about? (Your first instinct might be to doubt that an audience exists, but if you go niche enough, chances are there is a huge group just waiting for your stuff.)

I love writing because it allows me to put different concepts together in one place, one post, one argument. I learn new things every day, and putting the puzzle pieces together on this blog helps me much more than it probably helps any of you. (I love you for reading, though!) If writing isn’t for you, you can try video or podcasts — anything that helps you get that content out to the world.

The hard part with creating content is getting out there to the world. You have ideas, you have words, you have videos, you have whatever you want to create — but it’s hard to publish it to the web, right?

Ahoy, maties — web hosting to the rescue!

Hosting — Putting Your Files on the Web

Here’s where the technology stuff starts, so I’ll keep it as simple as possible — just the stuff you need to know to get started.

When I wanted to start my blog, I was pretty lost. I did a simple web search and decided upon my blogging platform. What I use today (and am highly in love with) is WordPress.org. Writing this blog post is as easy to editing a document on Microsoft Word — no joke. But to get the lovely WordPress stuff, first you have to buy some web hosting.

Scared yet? Don’t be! Web hosting just means a little space on the internet where you can store your files (like your blog, images, and WordPress stuff).

For hosting, give Bluehost a whirl. Trust me on this one. It’s easy and installing WordPress takes approximately two clicks and less than a minute. Honestly, I love Bluehost and wouldn’t change a thing. Once I found them, I haven’t looked back. I don’t know squat about writing complex code (what websites are really made out of), so Bluehost let me put this fancy blog (yes, the one you’re reading right now!) on the internet with just a few clicks.

Talk about a match made in heaven!

If you’re going to start a blog or a regular website (big or small), try Bluehost. They rock!

Domain — How People Find Your Stuff on the Web

Now that you know what you want to share with the world (hopefully, more of you!) and you know where to put that stuff on the internet, all we’re missing is the way to get people to find you and what you wish to share. That, my friends, is called a domain.

Look up at your web browser. See that it says www.marcellachamorro.com? That’s my blog’s domain. It’s time to help you choose yours!

This day and age, many great domains are taken already, so start searching for something soon. Oh, and do me a favor — register your kids’ names as domains, please. They might want it one day, and it’ll only cost you approx. $10/year until they do. You can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be registering domains for any mini-Marcella’s that I pop out!

You can also register your domain on Bluehost so don’t worry too much about how to get that done. Once you’ve signed up with them, you can actually register one domain for free. Be careful not to go too domain-happy! All you need is a solid direction to give your clients, friends, and family.

So, are we ready to start creating and sharing?

Did you see that — that nasty thought that just whirled by telling you that nobody will care about what you have to say? I saw it, and I’m telling you to kill it. I want to read, watch, and learn what you have to say. We all do.

It’s time to get off your butt, and start creating all that amazing content that only you can spark up. The world is waiting, and I can’t wait to see it.
